Project Overview

Retail Construction Contractors was appointed to deliver the construction management and principal contractor services for the new build Lidl store in Eccles, Manchester. The project formed part of Lidl’s continued UK expansion programme, delivering a modern retail environment designed to support high customer footfall, efficient store operations, and long-term trading performance.

Working within a live commercial environment and strict programme deadlines, our role was to coordinate the build from early construction phases through to practical completion, ensuring the store was delivered safely, efficiently, and ready for occupation.

The Eccles project required detailed planning, programme management, and close collaboration between consultants, subcontractors, suppliers, and the client team. As with all supermarket construction projects, maintaining programme certainty was critical due to fixed opening targets and coordinated retail rollout schedules.

Scope of Works

Our involvement included the management and coordination of multiple work packages across the development, including:

  • Principal contractor responsibilities
  • Construction management services
  • Site setup and logistics coordination
  • Groundworks and infrastructure coordination
  • Structural construction management
  • External envelope coordination
  • Internal retail fit-out support
  • Mechanical and electrical coordination
  • Health and safety management
  • Programme and subcontractor management
  • Quality assurance and inspections
  • Final commissioning and handover support

The project was managed with a strong emphasis on communication, sequencing, and programme control to ensure every phase progressed efficiently.

Delivering a Modern Retail Environment

Modern supermarket construction involves far more than simply building a retail shell. Every stage must support future operational performance, customer flow, access to servicing, energy efficiency, and trading functionality.

For the Lidl Eccles development, the construction programme was carefully coordinated to support:

  • Efficient customer circulation
  • Functional back-of-house operations
  • Delivery and servicing access
  • High-quality retail finishes
  • Durable construction standards
  • Long-term operational efficiency
  • Compliance with current retail and building regulations

The completed store was designed to reflect Lidl’s modern retail format while providing a practical and welcoming environment for both staff and customers.

Programme Management and Coordination

One of the key elements of the project was maintaining strict control over programme sequencing.

Retail developments operate to fixed deadlines, particularly where store launches, staffing, stock delivery, and marketing schedules are already in place. Delays within construction can impact multiple downstream operations.

Our team worked proactively with the client and supply chain to manage:

  • Procurement scheduling
  • Trade coordination
  • Site sequencing
  • Material deliveries
  • Inspection and testing procedures
  • Health and safety compliance
  • Quality control throughout construction

Regular progress meetings and collaborative planning helped maintain momentum across the build while reducing disruption and avoiding unnecessary delays.

Health and Safety Management

As principal contractor, health and safety remained a core priority throughout the project.

Retail construction environments involve multiple subcontractors working simultaneously across different phases of the build. Effective site management and coordination were essential to maintaining safe working conditions.

Our site management team implemented:

  • Strict site access procedures
  • Daily site briefings
  • Ongoing safety inspections
  • Contractor coordination meetings
  • Risk management procedures
  • Welfare and site housekeeping controls
  • CDM compliance management

Maintaining a safe, organised, and professionally managed site environment was central to the successful delivery of the project.

Construction Challenges

Like many supermarket developments, the Lidl Eccles project required careful coordination across multiple moving parts.

Key construction considerations included:

  • Managing programme-critical activities
  • Coordinating multiple specialist trades
  • Maintaining build quality under tight timelines
  • Ensuring efficient site logistics
  • Sequencing internal and external works effectively
  • Coordinating retail-specific installation requirements
  • Managing inspections and commissioning activities

Through proactive planning and experienced site management, the project was successfully progressed through each phase of construction.

The Outcome

The Lidl Eccles new build project was successfully delivered to support the client’s retail expansion objectives.

The completed development provided:

  • A modern, high-quality retail environment
  • Efficient operational layout
  • Durable long-term construction standards
  • Professional programme delivery
  • Coordinated construction management from start to finish

The project further strengthened our experience delivering supermarket and retail construction projects across the UK
